Week Two Recap - 3 Teams are Undefeated; 3 are Winless

Two weeks into the season and only three teams remain undefeated: London Scrappers, Goldstein Muckdogs and Unell Dragons.  Three other teams are still searching for their first victories.

The Royals rang in a new era as they began the 2014 season with back-to-back victories, defeating Hauf’s Sea Dogs 30 – 4 and Conn’s Tigers 9 – 6. Max Willard, Jonathan Braun, and Michael Barth had huge days for the Royals. Willard hit for a combined cycle for the doubleheader, and a slugging percentage of 1.625, Braun slugged five extra base hits in five at-bats for an astounding slugging percentage of 3.0, and Barth was spectacular as he won two games in extremely challenging weather conditions, with a miniscule slow pitch softball ERA of 5.0.

In the opener, the Royals faced a short-handed Sea Dogs team that was missing both their starting and backup pitchers. With a game-time temperature of 45⁰, a wind chill factor of 36⁰, and wind gusts as high as 24 mph blowing out on field 3, the Royals sent 21 batters to the plate, and parlayed eight walks and two homeruns into 15 runs to open the game. Willard christened the new season by blasting a 3-run homerun in his first at-bat as a Royal. The ball was hit so hard that it had not yet reached the top of its trajectory when it cleared the fence.

As the Royals cycled through their batting order for a second time in the inning, Bill Giudice came up to the plate with the bases loaded. Not to be outdone, Giudice launched a towering, fence clearing, grand slam to straight-away left field to put the Royals up 12 – 0. Gary Strouse closed out the first inning scoring with his second single and third RBI of the inning.

But it was a masterful pitching performance by Barth in the most brutal softball conditions imaginable, that secured the victory. Barth scattered seven hits (six singles and one mammoth homerun by Tim Williams) over four innings, and walked only two. In a game that featured gale force winds blowing out to left field, Barth kept the ball down and in the strike zone, forcing the Sea Dogs to continually ground out to Royals’ shortstop, Giudice. Giudice was flawless in his impersonation of a human vacuum cleaner in cleats, as he either recorded or assisted in over half the outs in the game. Barth was so effective that Royals’ left fielder, Roy White, did not have a single fly ball hit to him during the game.

In the top of the fourth, Braun hit an inside-the-park, 2-run homerun, and Strouse stroked an RBI single to close out the scoring. Willard and Strouse both finished a perfect 5 – 5, while Strouse’s 6 RBIs lead the team.

Max Willard  5 – 5, 5 Runs, 5 RBI, 3B, 3-run Fence HR
Gary Strouse  5 – 5, 1 Run, 6 RBI
Jonathan Braun  2 – 2, 5 Runs, 4 RBI, 2B, HR, 3 BB
Bill Giudice  2 – 3, 5 Runs, 2 BB, 4 RBI, Grand Slam Fence HR
Michael Barth  3 – 4, 4 Runs, 3 RBI, BB
Robert Reighter  2 – 4, 2 Runs, BB

In the nightcap, Barth outdueled Tiger’s ace, Paul Rakofsky in a low scoring affair on field 2 with the wind blowing in. The other story of the game was Braun, who put the Royals on his back, belting three consecutive triples, scoring twice, and driving in three, accounting for five of the nine Royals’ runs.

As they did in the first game, the Royals started off strong. Chase Berg singled to lead off the game. Robert Reighter doubled him home, and Giudice singled and took second on the throw to the plate. Willard followed with a 2-run single, and scored on Braun’s first triple. Braun scored the final run of the inning on a ground out. After that, Rakofsky settled into a groove and held the Royals to one run over the next three innings.

After being held scoreless for three innings, the Tigers finally solved Barth and scored one in the top of the fourth. Heading to the top of the fifth, the Royals saw the top of the Tigers’ lineup load the bases to begin the inning, and then mount a furious 5-run rally as former Royals Justin Toone and Joel Cerefice keyed the inning with RBI singles.

Knotted at 6 – 6, and heading to the bottom of the fifth, what looked like an early romp had turned into a real nail biter. With one out, Willard doubled and White walked to bring up Braun. Braun capped his stellar day by delivering his third triple of the game to give the Royals the lead for good. Barth’s RBI single added an insurance run, and then he made sure the lead stood up, closing the Tigers out in the top of the sixth.

Battling gale force winds, Willard, White, Berg, and Reighter made a number of highlight-reel catches in the outfield to preserve the victory, while Berg paced the Royals’ 14-hit attack with four hits in game 2.

Jonathan Braun  3 – 3, 2 Runs, 3 RBI, 3 3B, GWRBI
Chase Berg  4 – 4, 1 Run
Max Willard  2 – 3, 2 Runs, 2 RBI, 2B
Robert Reighter  2 – 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 2B
